Hapuna Beach and Whale Watching

We booked a whale watch excursion for the early afternoon, so we couldn't stray too far from the resort. We decided to take a trip to Hapuna Beach, a white sand beach about 5 miles north of the resort. It's consistently ranked one of the top 10 beaches in the world. It was really pretty and the sand was very fine. Too bad we only spent about an hour there.



The surf was really spectacular!


Then we took a catamaran out to search for whales. We saw the same whale maybe three times. They make a 3000 mile journey from Alaska to find a mate each December, then they return the following year to give birth in the warm Hawaii waters. They come down later and later every year and then stay later and later. They think they'll be around until April this season. They breach every 7-10 minutes, but on this trip they were only breaching 17 minutes apart.
